How to begin a personal statement?
In a personal essay, it is important to vividly describe a meaningful moment in your life, to create an effect of presence for the admission officers. On the other hand, the beginning of a personal essay should grab attention and intrigue.
Therefore, some of the most useful strategies you can use to begin an essay are:
– Onomatopoeia – a sudden sound, which you could hear during the moment you are describing – “Bang!” “Slam!”
– Quotation – tell what you have heard! not a quote of a prominent person, but of the one who was meaningful in your life and is part of the story you are telling – “You will never achieve anything in your life! These are the words …”; “How could you?/ You can be what you want to be! My parents were standing in front of me…”
– The conclusion, the outcome of the story you are telling – tell about the outcome of some event, then – about the event, then – about what it has taught you – “I buried my face in my pillow and cried the whole night”
