Why is it that I read texts and don’t understand anything?!
As for me, this happens when the task you put before yourself is “to read the text”. Then, you just read the words and sentences and exhale when the text is over. Your task is accomplished. You have read it. And you have understood nothing.
The trick is to approach every reading having an intention to understand the writer’s message or find some specific information. This is how you should read the sources to cite in an essay.
Read the topic sentences of paragraphs to receive hints about what argument the author makes.
Then, read the paragraphs, asking oneself each time, “What does the author want to tell by this? Why does he/she gives such example/fact/etc.?”.
Highlight some effective sentences to remind you of the position of an author when you have read the text or to use them as direct quotations.
These practices will substantially improve your understanding of texts you read!
